Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga have finally teamed up for their first collaboration, Die With A Smile. While fans embrace the timeless love story, Mars draws on personal pain from a terrorist attack that directly impacted him.
On Oct. 6, 2023, Mars performed to a sold-out crowd in Tel Aviv. Just hours later later, the country faced its largest massacre. Mars, still in Israel, was scheduled to perform a second show that evening.
Before 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, Israelis awoke to a nightmare. "I just woke up from a dream where you and I had to say goodbye," Mars sings, a chilling reference to the all of the citizens who quite literally woke up to the horrific news. His lyrics reflect his own survival and the fragile nature of life: "If the world was ending, I'd want to be next to you."
Lady Gaga's verse offers a broader interpretation. "Lost in the words that we scream, I don't even wanna do this anymore," she sings. This line echoes the weekly gatherings at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv, where people pray for the release of hostages, a painful and exhausting ritual. "Our love's the only one worth fighting for," she adds, possibly referencing the unity at these rallies—void of politics and blame, filled with only sadness, loss, and love.
The music video reinforces this imagery. Blues with pops of white evoke the Israeli flag, while stark reds seeping from both artists' clothing symbolize the bloodshed of that tragic day. These colors were chosen deliberately.
Die With A Smile offers comfort, regardless of the listener's interpretation. The message remains: stand by the one you love, even as the world crumbles.
