Updated: Oct 12, 2024

Marianas Trench headlined their highly anticipated "Force of Nature Tour" at the House of Blues on October 1, 2024, delivering a captivating performance that kept fans on their toes. The band, known for their intricate harmonies, dramatic staging, and Josh Ramsay's signature fashion choices, gave their Boston audience a night to remember. Opening the tour were PIAO and Cassadee Pope, each bringing their own distinct sound and energy, making the night a diverse showcase of talent from start to finish.

Kicking off the show was PIAO, a Chinese-Canadian pop/R&B singer and 2016 Slaight Family Foundation Presidential Scholar, a notable achievement she was sure to mention during her performance. Born in Shanghai and raised in Toronto, PIAO has skillfully bridged the gap between Chinese pop and American R&B music. Having begun her musical journey at just three years old, she studied classical piano at The Royal Conservatory of Music before earning her scholarship to Berklee College of Music. Her unique background has shaped her soulful and dynamic performances, reflecting her experiences living between two cultures.

Her setlist included tracks like "Neopet," "Anticipatory Grief," and a cover of Paramore's "Still Into You," demonstrating her ability to blend genres seamlessly. PIAO expressed that performing on the House of Blues stage held significant meaning for her, recalling how she was once brought there for educational trips as a student. Excited to be on tour with Marianas Trench, she shared that they were the soundtrack of her childhood. Each of her songs draws inspiration from her personal experiences and emotions, allowing her to connect deeply with her audience. Through her heartfelt lyrics and relatable themes, PIAO invites listeners into her world, creating a genuine bond that resonates long after the last note fades.

Next on stage was Cassadee Pope, who brought a mix of her pop-punk roots and newer solo material to the House of Blues crowd. Best known for fronting Hey Monday and later winning Season 3 of The Voice, Pope’s setlist featured a blend of her Hey Monday tracks, including "Homecoming" and "Wish You Were Here," as well as her solo hits like "Wasting All These Tears." The set also included a cover of "Defying Gravity," which Pope delivered with passion, showcasing her vocal range.

Now diving back into her pop-punk origins after years in the country scene, Pope’s performance had a nostalgic energy. She even reflected on her journey from her Hey Monday days to her solo career, sharing how much it meant to be part of this tour and reconnecting with her earlier musical influences.

In a particularly touching moment, Pope stopped her performance when she noticed someone in the audience needed assistance—an act that every artist should emulate. This genuine display of care for her fans, paired with her heartfelt songwriting, created a performance that resonated on multiple levels, highlighting not only her vocal talent but her sincerity and compassion.

Finally, Marianas Trench took to the stage with the theatrical energy they are known for. Every member of the band showcased their individual talents, taking over different parts of the set, creating an engaging and dynamic experience for the audience. Josh Ramsay, the frontman, emerged in a striking trench coat that could only be described as reminiscent of Organization XIII from Kingdom Hearts, adding to the drama of the performance.

Their set included crowd favorites like 'Pop 101,' where Josh humorously acknowledged singing the wrong part, quipping, 'At least you know I’m not lip-syncing!' This lighthearted moment perfectly captured the band's playful energy. They followed up with 'Into the Storm,' which showcased an impressive display of wind and snow effects, creating a dramatic atmosphere that truly emulated the chaos of a storm. The visuals enhanced the performance, immersing the audience in the band's theatrical world and amplifying the emotional intensity of the song.

As the evening progressed, Marianas Trench brought back the snow during "Turn and Run" and delivered a powerful solo performance of "Stand and Fight" by Josh. The band even announced that they wouldn’t make fans wait another five years for their next visit, much to the excitement of the audience. Overall, the night was a beautiful tapestry of musical styles and heartfelt performances, leaving the crowd buzzing with energy and anticipation for future shows.
