2015 has been a landmark year for Rachel Platten. From signing with a record label and performing with Taylor Swift to making her debut on Good Morning America and closing the year on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, Platten has been unstoppable. As she starts 2016, she continues the momentum with the release of her new album, Wildfire, on Jan. 1.
Wildfire opens with “Stand by You,” a hit single that has been resonating on radio stations for months. The album transitions into “Hey Hey Hallelujah,” a track co-written with and featuring Andy Grammer. This upbeat song initially felt out of place. However, after a few listens, it becomes an infectious anthem.
The album includes familiar tracks for longtime fans. Although the Fight Song EP is no longer available for purchase, it featured “Fight Song,” “Beating Me Up,” “Lone Ranger,” and “Congratulations,” all of which are now on Wildfire. For new fans, this is a great introduction to Platten’s earlier work. For those who bought the EP, the inclusion of these songs might feel repetitive, with only seven new tracks on the album’s 12.
“Better Place” is a slower ballad with strings and piano, reminiscent of Platten’s first single, “1000 Ships.” It reflects her optimism during tough times. The album also includes “Angels in Chelsea,” an ode to her new home, New York. It closes with “Superman,” a heartfelt track dedicated to her husband.
Rachel Platten’s Wildfire not only empowers but also provides comfort and perspective. With a distinct sound and thematic consistency, Platten’s album is a strong start to the new year. Be sure to catch Wildfire, out Jan. 1.
