Yellowcard's "Ten" Addresses Hard-Hitting Themes

The most challenging topics often yield the most powerful lyrics, and one prime example is the ninth track on Yellowcard’s latest album, Southern Air. The song, titled “Ten,” delves into deeply personal territory. In a recent interview, frontman Ryan Key remarked, “People are going to ask me a lot about that song when it comes out, and I’m probably not going to answer many questions about it… It was hard enough to write it; I don’t really want to talk about it.” Despite his reluctance to discuss the song further, the lyrics convey a poignant message.

The initial lines of “Ten” suggest a reflection on loss and mourning, potentially related to a miscarriage. The line “would you have had my eyes?” encapsulates the sorrow and uncertainty of such an experience. The simplicity of the question underscores the profound emotional impact, as it remains unanswered.

“Ten” is notably the only acoustic track on Southern Air, apart from the band's cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You.” The choice to present it acoustically highlights the song’s authenticity and emotional depth.

While Southern Air is filled with exceptional tracks, “Ten” stands out as a compelling recommendation for those exploring the album.
