The wait is finally over - in partnership with the release of Univeral Pictures' newest sensation, Wicked, Universal Studios, Republic Records, and Verve Records have released Wicked: The Soundtrack. The soundtrack that we've been waiting for since birth includes hits from the stage show, such as "Defying Gravity," "The Wizard And I," and my personal favorite, "Dancing Through Life." The full track listing can be found below.
Listen to Wicked: The Soundtrack HERE.
Written and composed by Grammy and Oscar® award winner Stephen Schwartz—known for his work on Pippin, Godspell, The Prince of Egypt, as well as the Broadway production of Wicked—Wicked: The Soundtrack brings together an all-star cast whose voices blend together seamlessly. Leading the charge is Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, just one Oscar® shy of achieving the prestigious EGOT status. Joining her as Galinda/Glinda is Grammy-winning global sensation Ariana Grande, credited in the film as Ariana Grande-Butera. Together, they're unlimited as they breathe new life into these iconic songs.
Other talents on the soundtrack include Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Emmy nominee Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) as the heartthrob, Fiyero, along with Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, Independence Day) portraying the man behind the screen, The Wizard himself.
Schwartz shared his excitement for the release stating, "I am so proud of our Wicked soundtrack. These world-class singers and this wonderful full orchestra have given me and my music team the chance to make a recording that I think will excite both fans of the Broadway cast recording and audiences hearing these Wicked songs for the first time."
The opening track, “No One Mourns the Wicked,” not only sets the tone for the story but also contains (at least) two subtle nods (that I've noticed so far) to The Wizard of Oz within its first two minutes. Grande as Glinda delivers a performance filled with emotion—a depth I never felt from the original Broadway recording. It’s a testament to the care and intention that went into adapting this score for the big screen.
The digital-only bonus track, “Ozdust Duet,” has been on repeat for me—three hours straight and counting. After seeing the film only once, I believe this is the score during the pivotal moment in "Dancing Through Life," which gave me feelings I've never felt while watching it in the theater. As a lover of all things instrumental, this song offers a peak at the score of the film—something I hope to be released in the future.
“One Short Day” deserves special mention as a highlight of both the film and soundtrack. The energy of the song perfectly encaptures the wonder and whimsy of Oz while also layering in moments that add depth to the story. Without giving too much away, this sequence not only showcases the magic of Oz but also ties into Wicked’s broader legacy. The inclusion of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the original Elphaba and Glinda, elevates this moment beyond nostalgia; it’s a beautiful nod to the legends who first brought these roles to life, shaping a cultural phenomenon. Their voices tell the story of the Wizard’s arrival in Oz and his rise to power, and their inclusion beautifully represents a symbolic passing of the torch to the new cast. This acknowledgment of the past doesn’t just celebrate the legacy of Wicked—it cements it as a force in pop culture history while looking forward to its future.
Whether you’re a long-time fan or stepping into the world of Oz for the first time, Wicked: The Soundtrack is a journey that defies gravity.
The soundtrack is available in various formats, including CD, double vinyl, double picture disk, and digital. Exclusive versions can also be found at Target, with a pink-and-green split vinyl, as well as Barnes & Noble, which carries an exclusive version of the CD with an alternate cover.
Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is only the first half of the two-part immersive experience. Wicked Part Two is currently scheduled to be in theaters on November 21, 2025.
